DEATH: The Chilling Narrator
Images of Death: How I portrayed and represented DEATH!
Adjectives that Describe DEATH
Important Quotes by Death:
" You are going to die." (1.6)
This quote by Death summarizes the time period the novel is set in. During WWII millions of people died and death was nothing out of the ordinary. Here Death is just stating the fact plain and simply. He's not really telling us anything we don't know, however he's expressing the commonality among all humans and our identity, which is mortality.
" I witness the ones that are left behind, crumbled among the jigsaw puzzles of realization, despair, and surprise. They have punctured hearts. They have beaten lungs. "(1.22)
From Death's point of view, living with the loss of a loved one is much worse than dying. Liesel has to live with the devastation and heartbreak of losing her younger brother for the rest of her life!
"The last time I saw her was red. The sky was like soup, boiling and stirring. In some places it was burned. There were black crumbs and pepper, streaked across the redness." (4.1)
This quote presents incredible imagery of the sky over Himmel Street when it's bombed in 1942. The words make you feel as though you are in the middle of the bombing, surrounded by smoke and blood everywhere!
"They were French, they were Jews, and they were you." (52.18)
I chose this quote by Death because it reminds us that we are all human, and all united by death. Everyone will die at some point in their life and it is ridiculous that we kill one another. Humans should live united and just let death happen naturally when it is supposed to.
